So Chellsie Memmel's comeback:
The meet can be seen here.
Bars: 8.800
All of her cast handstands seemed very forced and she has some issues straightening her arms. She fell on her dismount. The routine was cut short, but her tkatchev was good and her pirouettes were nice.
Beam: 9.650
All of her elements were very solid, but she was lacking a ton of difficulty here.
Vault: 9.675
It was only a 1.5 yurchenko, not that impressive in the elite world. Her form was okay but not great.

I don't think that she has much of a chance coming back as an all arounder. With the people competitive now, a double twisting yurchenko is the minimum with a amanar really needed. If she could get her bars together, she could maybe be used in that, since the US is really lacking in that regard, but some of the upcoming juniors honestly show more promise. It is 2011 already. If she wants to shoot for 2012, she has a long way to go. As someone that has competed elite since 2000, being alternate of one olympic team and on another, and having gone through so many injuries she needs to hang up her leotard. However, crazier things have happened.

From this meet however, we gained two more supergirl qualifiers! Mary Jane Horth and Kathryn Kluz are now qualified, but legitimate level 10 gymnasts. Horth winning 2010 junior c NIT, Kluz 7th all around at nationals with a full scholarship to Auburn.

Gymnastike has posted a new video of Anna Li, here. This shows some amazing training footage. Her bars are really going somewhere and could be a huge asset. Including a Tkatchev-Gienger, Tkatchev 1/2-Ezhova, Shaposh-Pak, Shaposh 1/2, and Jaeger 1/2.

The national team girls are at camp this week in two shifts as well as some other "hopefuls". Hopefully everyone will make it out in one piece.
This coming weekend we have 3 supergirl qualifiers: Parkette invitational, metroplex challenge, and wisconsin dells gymnastics vacation classic.

I smell some comebacks coming on...

Recently, all the hype has been over the comebacks of Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin, the latter yet to be confirmed. However, neither of these girls have set a date to compete and show us where they are and what we can expect.
However, recent news has come out about 3 others.
Chellsie Memmel:
This article states that Memmel is set to compete at the Circle of Stars invitational this weekend. This should be fairly interesting because after Beijing, I was convinced that she was through. After 2 quads and countless injuries, it seemed like time to call it quits. However, she is set to compete 3 events, all but floor. This should be interesting.
Anna Li:
We have all been hearing snippets about her training here and there. Training at AOGC, she is reportedly still training elite, and after a fantastic senior year with UCLA, I am very excited. The US could seriously use her bars. This article from IG states that she is going to compete in the coming months and give elite another go. I can't wait.
Casey Jo Magee:
Her website has a new blog post talking about her training. I love how honest she is. I wish more athletes would do this. She really delves into how tough it can be and talks about her routines and training. After unsuccessfully making elite last year after coming right off NCAA she is ready to try again more prepared. She is set to compete at the WOGA classic and I am so excited!

The season started this weekend with many meets including CGA coaches spectacular and Lady Luck invitational.
Notably, 8 gymnasts qualified for the Nastia Liukin cup, 5 of them elites or former elites: Amelia Hundley, Kayla Williams, Katie Bailey, Georgia Dabritz, Lauren Marinez, Makayla Skinner, Kaitlin Hall, and Brittney Sooksengdao.
I feel as if this defeats the purpose of the competition. According to Nastia's website, the purpose is to "provide the nations best Level 10 athletes the experience of competing on a podium." While I agree that this is good, with the exception of Katie Bailey, these athletes are not level 10 and have competed on the podium before at nationals last August. How can a level 10 athlete compete against a world vault champion? Nastia even said herself, “I wanted to make sure it wasn’t for the Elite athletes.” The level 10 athletes will have less of a chance to shine in such a meet because of the elite athletes and, more importantly, many gymnasts will not get to compete on a podium in front of a lot of people because elites are taking there spot.
In other news, WOGA announced a list of those set to compete at the WOGA classic February 18-20.

Not much new in the world of gymnastics.
Alyssa Baumann and Sophia Lee of WOGA traveled to Moscow for the Voronin Cup. Alyssa, competing as a junior, came in 4th all around, bars, and floor while Sophia Lee competing in senior came in 4th on bars and 8th on beam. I would say that this is really good for the girls, considering that they were competing against some top gymnasts in the world while they did not even make the US national team. I would definitely keep an eye out for Alyssa in the coming years.

Vanessa Zamarripa Out for season

Vanessa Zamarripa tore her achilles tendon today in practice and will be out for the rest of the season. This is so sad! She is an amazing gymnast and this knocks out both rocking in the NCAA and in international competitions! I hope she comes back strong next year! Thank goodness UCLA has a lot of good gymnasts.

Bumbo Cup and more

Bumbo cup happened this weekend and US sent Katelyn Ohashi and McKenzie Wofford. Madison Kocian was injured. Both girls did extremely well going one, two on everything except vault, where McKenzie got bronze. Katelyn winning all around, floor, and vault (throwing the only double twisting yurchenko of the competition) and McKenzie won bars and beam.

An article about Legacy Elite gymnastics was written in the Chicago Tribune, here. It talks about the Caquatto sisters as well as some of the other gymnasts.

Nastia appeared on the biggest loser this past week and nbc Dallas did a piece on it and also showed a little bit of her gymnastics, but not much here.

I do apologize for it being a while since I have updated! I have gotten very busy and the post-world blogging depression was getting to me, but I am back!
Shawn Johnson went to the most recent national team training camp. This is very exciting because Chow thinks she is ready to show Martha what she's got! Great to see her back!
Nastia is also in the gym. She is giving herself until Christmas to decide if she will attempt a comeback or not. Personally, I think that she would be a great addition with her beam and bars for the team right now, but with some of the juniors coming up, like Jordyn Wieber (who just threw a hindorff at camp) or Kyla Ross, she is going to have some competition!
Cassie Whittcomb and Canada's Peng Peng Christine Lee have signed to UCLA for next year with Samantha Shapiro for Stanford, Kayla Williams for Bama, and Chelsea Davis for Georgia.
The Top gym competition in Belgium just finished the all around competition with the event finals tomorrow. Ariana Guerra of the US came in second behind Russia's Anastasia Sidorova. Ericha Fassbender came in 4th.
Bumbo Cup in South Africa is coming up next week. Katelyn Ohashi and Mckenzie Wofford will be there with the possibility of Madison Kocian also being in attendance.

Worlds podium training

So podium training is now over and the qualifying competition will begin in about 9 hours and the US will compete on Friday.

After much anticipation....
We have the worlds team:
Rebecca Bross
Mackenzie Caquatto
Chelsea Davis
Mattie Larson
Aly Raisman
Alicia Sacramone
Bridget Sloan

Overall not too many surprises. Samantha Shapiro did not attend camp due to a stress fracture which is really too bad because she is an amazing gymnast, but always getting hurt. Mackenzie Caquatto did great at camp, coming in 1st all around with Aly second. Bross has been a little iffy with a foot/ankle injury and only doing some events.
The alternate position will most likely be decked out between Sloan and Davis. If Sloan can hit, its all hers, but she came in last AA at camp and hasn't had the best record in the past year after worlds.
Most notably missing was Kytra Hunter. A great gymnast, but her bars were struggling and that was where the US needed her most. Alicia and Aly are great specialists on everything else and took her place.
Anyway this team looks great and I wish them best of luck for worlds!

Anyway so the 12 girls from the US are heading to the final selection camp for the 2010 worlds. It does have quite the ominous ring to it doesn't it?
The girls are:

Lets here a bit more about each in 3 categories: locks, bubble, not a chance
Locks:
Rebecca Bross: National champ, Pacific Rim Champ, American Cup champ and came in 2nd at last years worlds. Last year, she was a bit inconsistent, fumbling when it mattered most costing her world champ and national champ, but this year she looks pretty solid and probably US's best chance for an All around medal.
Mattie Larson: 2nd at nationals and won classics, She has been out for a while with injuries, but has come back even stronger than ever! Her floor was absolutely gorgeous.
Alicia Sacramone: She has more international experience than anyone on the team and has proved at classics and nationals that she can kick butt. She is stronger than ever and more focused and mature. She has a very good chance of becoming world vault champion and her beam isn't too shabby either. I just can't wait til she gets her floor back!

On the Bubble:
Mackenzie Caquatto: She is a very nice gymnast and could do well in bars which the US needs, but after she failed a simple cast handstand at nationals, she is a bit iffy. She will be heading to Florida this winter and will do great there. She also fell on beam during the first camp.
Chelsea Davis: Her bars will also be very useful. She also had a scary fall on her straddled Jaeger at nationals. She has very little international experience.
Kytra Hunter: Her beam floor and vault are very good but the US is pretty strong here. Her bars are very sub-par and she doesn't have a ton of international experience.
Aly Raisman: She won all around at the first selection camp and has a very good beam, but her floor lacks personality and her bars are not good.
Samantha Shapiro: Putting aside the fact that I think this girl is awesome, she is very good all around and I love her floor and beam. She also is coming back from an injury and is pretty prone to injury after hyperextending both knees at classics. Her bars are pretty good too, which the US needs.
Bridget Soan: Reigning world champ, it would be hard to see her not making the team, however she has shown very little in the past year since worlds: a bar routine where she missed her toe on handstand, a beam routine where she fell, and another messy beam routine. Martha was not happy about her taking so much time to heal from her injury and I have to think that might factor in, as well.
Cassie Whitcomb: Another strong bar worker, getting 2nd at nationals, she doesn't do beam and has been having some injury trouble. She also doesn't have a ton of international experience.

Not a chance:
Amanda Jetter: She came in 2nd at classics, but was injured for nationals. Her form has something to be desired, but her floor can be good.
Morgan Smith: Her beam can be pretty good, but she has very little international experience and I just can't she her making it.

Pan Am Championships

So the US Pan Am Championship team has been named:
Gabrielle Douglas, Kyla Ross, Sabrina Vega, Sarah Finnegan, Brenna Dowell, and McKayla Maroney.
This is really exciting for Finnegan, Dowell, Maroney, and Douglas because it is their first international competition. It is interesting because in this meet, the juniors will be competing with seniors because the competition age limit restriction is born before or during 1996. All of these girls have so much potential, I am really excited to see them!

I know that Sloan is reigning world champ and that has to count for something, but she fudged up her one event at Pacific Rims and both nights at Championships and Martha just hasn't seen her compete elsewhere and she hasn't been very cooperative about getting back to all around, not that that is wrong, but Martha won't like it. I think Larson is a stronger all around athlete right now and she has a floor to die for.

I see the team being: Sacramone, Bross, Larson, Raisman, Hunter, and M.Caquatto but everything is up in the air.

Pan am championship camp is also starting this weekend, though no information on who is invited is available. However, with worlds so close, it is doubtful that they will send any of their senior athletes, considering that gymnasts born in '95 and '96 are eligible.

So Miss Val (coach of UCLA bruins gymnastics team) came out with an interview today to state that Vanessa Zamarippa will not be trying to compete in this year's World Championship. She said that she is working with Martha to make elite and NCAA doable at the same time, which is great! Now we won't have to have gymnasts choose, which could sometimes mean choosing between elite and going to college. Vanessa will try and upgrade her skills to get ready for future elite competitions which is great! Plus this girl needs a break! After just finishing a full NCAA year, she then moved into an elite season where she shined!

Surprise, surprise, Komova dominates the all around in the Youth Olympic games. If only Wieber were there for their long awaited showdown... We will, alas, have to continue our wait. Viktoria Komova of Russia scored the highest on 3 out of 4 events, giving us high expectations for more medals for her in the event finals, which will be held on Saturday and Sunday. I hope Wieber was watching and biting her nails and gets into the gym to give Komova a run for her money!
